@ccbackwoods/geotrail T here are over 1000 miles of trails in Clearfield County. Each one offering a unique character of its own. The newest addition to this assembly is the Clearfield County Geo Trail or CCGT. The trail opened in late May and has already been recognized as a geocaching favorite. Thanks to our Geocaching Volunteer Committee, a trail of over 300 miles and 30 caches has been developed for all to enjoy. The plan is to open a new leg of the trail each spring for the next 5 years. Each year a new theme will be introduced, our first leg is themed Cemeteries. For those who are not familiar with the sport of geocaching it is defined as a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game; where players try to locate hidden containers using GPS-enabled devices. A cacher will locate a container with a GPS device and share their experience online at www.geocaching. com . The container most likely will have something for you to take and offer a place for you to leave something for others. Our trail has been set up to serve all levels of cachers from experienced to beginners. Along with the actual sport you can enjoy the history behind these hidden locations. Many of the cemeteries have soldiers from the Civil War allowing you to travel back in history. Some feature stories about local celebrities and pioneers. It is always interesting to explore your genealogy and look for your last name or relative’s last name. To get started, you need to pick up an official Clearfield County GeoTrail Passport book. There are seven locations throughout the county that have passports. Visit our website www. VisitClearfieldCounty.org/outdoors/geotrail for locations and coordinates. You need to find 25 out of the 30 geocaches hidden throughout the County. At each geocache location there is a unique stamp for marking your passport. After collecting 25 different stamps you can bring or send your passport book to our office for validation and receive a unique wooden coin and bragging rights.
